OspreyI liked this artwork of an Osprey. Saw it today in the Visitor's Centre at Whinlatter Forest. I was not sure if I was allowed to take photos, so it was taken in a bit of a hurry. I will go back and see who the artist is and at least credit him for his work.
Ospreys are rare in the UK and we generally have 2 who nest by Bassenthwaite Lake. Nobody is sure why only 2, as the lake could easily support 4 pairs - but for whatever reason, the Ospreys have decided 2 is their limit here.
Great excitement this year as the male returned with a new female. They nested in the usual place for the first 2 weeks (their nests are huge) and then the female decided that she wanted a new nest and they moved further round the lake. Well this caused some fun, as all of the viewing points and cameras have been set up for years near the old nest - so this year we haven't been able to follow them as closely as in the past. Typical new wife! Don't blame her for wanting to start afresh though - lol.
The nest is guarded 24 hours a day by volunteers - as is all the other work by "Osprey Watch".

It's a wonderful photo, Linda. Especially for being taken on the sly...
That is a beautiful piece of art as is your image of it. I love this!
I've yet to sight this wonderful bird, have to go too deep into the wooded areas of the lakes here. I really enjoyed hearing about the pair you have and really happy to hear they are protected.
What a lovely piece of artwork! And how lucky you are to have a pair nesting near you (I have no idea if there are any near here). I wish conservation was as important to more people - I hate the thought of breeds becoming extinct.
